Aja Ekadashi 2026 is an important Ekadashi dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. According to Hindu religious traditions, observing Aja Ekadashi with devotion and following the prescribed rituals helps destroy sins, overcome difficulties, purify the mind, and receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

The significance of Aja Ekadashi is beautifully described through the story of King Harishchandra, who remained committed to truth even during the most difficult circumstances of his life. According to the Vrat Katha, observing Aja Ekadashi helped him overcome his suffering and regain his kingdom, family, and happiness.

Let us explore Aja Ekadashi 2026 date, Ekadashi Tithi timings, Parana Muhurat, fasting procedure, Vrat Katha, religious significance, and benefits.

What is Ekadashi Parana?

Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi fasting is generally concluded on the next day after sunrise, during Dwadashi Tithi.

According to traditional Hindu practices, the fast should preferably be broken within the prescribed Dwadashi Tithi. If Dwadashi ends before sunrise, different rules may apply according to the Panchang and tradition being followed.

Why Should Parana Not Be Done During Hari Vasara?

Devotees are traditionally advised not to break the Ekadashi fast during Hari Vasara.

Hari Vasara refers to the early portion of Dwadashi Tithi. One should wait until Hari Vasara has passed before performing Parana.

The Pratahkal (early morning) is generally considered the most suitable time for breaking the Ekadashi fast. Devotees are advised to avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna (midday). If Parana cannot be performed during Pratahkal due to unavoidable circumstances, it may be done later according to the prescribed rules.

For Aja Ekadashi 2026, the Parana window is:

September 8, 2026 — 6:02 AM to 8:33 AM

Aja Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Arjuna Asked:

“O Pundarikaksha! Please tell me about the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. What is this Ekadashi called? How should it be observed, and what benefits are obtained by keeping this fast?”

Lord Krishna Replied:

“O Son of Kunti! The Ekadashi that occurs during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month is known as Aja Ekadashi.

A person who observes this Ekadashi with devotion is believed to be freed from sins. Those who sincerely worship the Lord on this sacred day receive His blessings. Aja Ekadashi is considered highly significant for both spiritual purification and the attainment of religious merit.”

Lord Krishna then narrated the story of King Harishchandra.

The Story of King Harishchandra

In ancient times, King Harishchandra ruled the city of Ayodhya. He was renowned for his courage, power, righteousness, and above all, his unwavering commitment to truth.

By divine circumstances, he was compelled to give away his kingdom to a sage. His difficulties increased to such an extent that he was forced to sell his wife and son. Eventually, he became a servant of a Chandala and began performing the difficult duty of collecting fees associated with the final rites of the deceased.

Despite experiencing extreme suffering and humiliation, King Harishchandra never abandoned the path of truth.

Years passed, and the king became deeply distressed by his circumstances. He constantly wondered how he could become free from his suffering and the consequences of his difficult situation.

One day, when King Harishchandra was overwhelmed with sorrow, Sage Gautama appeared before him.

The king respectfully greeted the sage and narrated the entire story of his suffering.

After hearing the king's sorrowful account, Sage Gautama felt compassion for him. He told the king:

“O King! The Ekadashi occurring during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month is known as Aja Ekadashi. Observe this sacred fast according to the prescribed rituals and remain awake throughout the night, remembering and worshipping the Lord. The power of this Ekadashi will remove your sins and help you overcome your suffering.”

After giving this advice, Sage Gautama disappeared.

King Harishchandra followed the sage's instructions. On Aja Ekadashi, he observed the fast with devotion and remained awake throughout the night.

As a result of the spiritual merit of the fast, his sins were destroyed and his difficult circumstances began to disappear.

At that moment, celestial drums were heard and flowers were showered from heaven. King Harishchandra witnessed the presence of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Mahesha, Lord Indra, and other divine beings.

To his great astonishment, he saw that his deceased son had returned to life and that his wife was dressed in royal clothes and adorned with beautiful ornaments.

Through the power of Aja Ekadashi, King Harishchandra regained his kingdom and was reunited with his family.

It was revealed that the entire difficult situation had been created as a test of the king's commitment to truth. However, the spiritual power of Aja Ekadashi dispelled the illusion and brought an end to his suffering.

Ultimately, King Harishchandra, along with his family, attained the heavenly realm.

Lord Krishna explained that all this happened through the power and merit of observing Aja Ekadashi.

According to the traditional account, a person who observes this fast with sincere devotion and performs night vigil receives great spiritual merit. Even listening to the Aja Ekadashi Vrat Katha is traditionally said to provide merit comparable to that of performing an Ashwamedha Yajna.

According to Hindu religious beliefs, observing Aja Ekadashi with devotion may provide several spiritual benefits:

Should Ekadashi Fasting Be Observed on Two Consecutive Days?

In some circumstances, Ekadashi fasting may be prescribed on two consecutive days, depending on the Panchang and the tradition being followed.

Traditionally, Smartha devotees living a household life are generally advised to observe the fast on the first day.

The second Ekadashi fasting day is traditionally prescribed particularly for Sannyasis, widows, and those seeking Moksha.

When the second Ekadashi day is also prescribed for Smartha devotees, it generally coincides with the Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.

Spiritual Significance of Aja Ekadashi

His story reminds us that:

“Even in the most difficult circumstances, one should never abandon the path of truth and righteousness.”

Aja Ekadashi Katha Saar

The central message of Aja Ekadashi is simple yet powerful:

Have unwavering faith in God. Even when life becomes extremely difficult, do not abandon truth, Dharma, and righteousness.

The test of one's character often comes during the most challenging moments. Just as King Harishchandra remained truthful despite severe suffering, devotees are encouraged to remain patient, faithful, and spiritually committed.
