Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha

The Story of Goddess Shailputri's Abduction

The story of Hartalika Teej was narrated by Lord Shiva himself to Goddess Parvati, reminding her of her incarnation as Goddess Shailputri. Goddess Parvati was born as Goddess Shailputri in the house of King Himalaya.

From childhood, Goddess Shailputri began performing penance to please Lord Shiva. She prayed for twelve years to please Lord Shiva and thereafter remained engaged in severe penance for 64 years.

King Himalaya became concerned about the future of his daughter. Once, Narada Muni came to meet Shailputri and falsely told King Himalaya that he had come on behalf of Lord Vishnu with a marriage proposal for his daughter. King Himalaya promised Narada Muni that he would marry his daughter to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu also accepted the marriage proposal at the request of Narada Muni.

As soon as Shailputri came to know about her father's promise to marry her to Lord Vishnu, she left her home with her female friend. They went into a dense forest, where Shailputri began performing penance in a cave on the banks of a river to please Lord Shiva.

Eventually, Lord Shiva became pleased with her penance and promised Goddess Shailputri that he would marry her. The next day, on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, Shailputri and her female friend observed a fast for Lord Shiva.

King Himalaya was extremely worried about his daughter because he thought that someone had abducted her. Along with his army, King Himalaya began searching for Shailputri everywhere.

Finally, he found his daughter and her female friend in the dense forest. He requested his daughter to return home. Shailputri said that she would return only if her father promised to marry her to Lord Shiva.

King Himalaya accepted her wish and, eventually, arranged her marriage with Lord Shiva.

According to this mythological story, this day came to be known as Hartalika Teej, because Goddess Parvati's female friend had taken her into the dense forest, which King Himalaya had misunderstood as the abduction of his daughter.

The word "Hartalika" is a combination of "Harat" and "Aalika", which respectively mean "abduction" and "female friend."
