Once, Arjuna asked Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi that occurs during the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. He asked about its name, significance, method of observing the fast, and the benefits associated with it.

Lord Krishna explained that this Ekadashi is also known as Jayanti Ekadashi and that worshipping Lord Vishnu in his Vamana form has special significance.

Lord Krishna then narrated the story of King Bali. In the Treta Yuga, there was a powerful Asura king named Bali. He was known for his devotion, generosity, truthfulness, and service to Brahmins. Through his Yajnas, penance, and strength, he gained control over the heavenly kingdom. The gods then approached Lord Vishnu and prayed for his help.

To restore balance, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a young Brahmin boy, and arrived at King Bali's Yajna. Vamana asked King Bali to grant him three steps of land. King Bali agreed to fulfill his request.

After receiving the promise, Lord Vamana assumed a gigantic form. With his first step, he covered the Earth, and with his second step, he covered the heavens and the remaining realms. When there was no place left for his third step, King Bali bowed down and offered his own head.

Lord Vamana placed his third step on Bali's head and sent him to the netherworld. Pleased with King Bali's devotion and surrender, Lord Vishnu promised to remain with him and protect him.

According to the religious tradition associated with Parivartini Ekadashi, one form of Lord Vishnu remains near King Bali while another rests on Sheshnag in the Ksheer Sagar.

It is believed that on this Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu changes his sleeping position. Hence, the day is known as Parivartini Ekadashi.
