Ganga Dussehra 2026: The Sacred Festival of Maa Ganga’s Divine Descent

25 May 2026, Monday

Ganga Dussehra is one of the most sacred and spiritually significant festivals in Sanatan Dharma. This holy day marks the divine descent of Maa Ganga from the heavenly realms to Earth. Devotees believe that worshipping Maa Ganga with faith and devotion on this auspicious occasion helps cleanse sins, purify the soul, and open the path toward spiritual liberation.

Spiritual Significance of Ganga Dussehra

The word “Dussehra” is derived from two Sanskrit words:

  • “Dasha” = Ten

  • “Hara” = Destruction

Ganga Dussehra symbolizes the destruction of ten types of sins or the purification of karmas accumulated over ten lifetimes.

Maa Ganga is not merely a river; she is revered as a divine force representing purity, compassion, spiritual cleansing, and salvation. Her blessings are believed to purify the mind, speech, and actions of devotees.

The Divine Origin of Maa Ganga

According to the Bhagavata Purana, when Lord Vishnu took the Vamana Avatar and expanded His cosmic form to measure the universe, His toe pierced the celestial boundary. From that divine opening emerged sacred cosmic waters, which later became the holy River Ganga.

Because Maa Ganga first touched the feet of Lord Vishnu, she became known as “Vishnupadi” and “Bhagavat-Padi.” She then resided in the celestial realms until the time came for her descent to Earth.

How Did Maa Ganga Descend to Earth?

King Sagara’s 60,000 sons were reduced to ashes due to Sage Kapila’s curse, leaving their souls without liberation. To free his ancestors, King Bhagiratha performed severe penance and deep meditation for many years.

Pleased by his devotion, Lord Brahma granted permission for Maa Ganga to descend to Earth. However, her immense celestial force was so powerful that Earth could not withstand it.

King Bhagiratha then prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Out of compassion, Mahadev caught the mighty Ganga in His divine matted locks, controlling her powerful flow before gently releasing her onto Earth.

Following Bhagiratha, Maa Ganga finally reached the ashes of King Sagara’s sons and granted them liberation and salvation.

This divine event is celebrated every year as Ganga Dussehra.
